Multi-Screen Art from Island

Ragnar Kjartansson

Islandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson’s multi-screen art installation called the Visitors is yet another fantastic exhibition at Vinylfactory situated in Brewer Street car park. It is a music performance piece collaboration with musicians and friends.

The simplicity of the installation, it is kind of a low tech approach, makes makes it a strong concept. Everything takes place in one house. On the screens we see what is happening inside the house, but each screen covers a different room. In each room a musician is performing a same piece of music. Together performances from separate screens form an orchestra.

What makes the piece intriguing is how the screens are set up like staging in theatre, where you can only see part of the set and have to imagine the rest. This adds up the intensity and makes it a living drama.

The music itself is very beautiful and haunting, which makes the whole experience feel quite intimate.
